It was a great day helping out with gardening and talking to people at the same time. People were very grateful and it was enjoyable relating to them. One person got quite upset and angry, feeling quite humiliated that her family were never around to help her. I explained that we were there because we wanted to help and it was a pleasure we could. She calmed down and when we left she was just so thankful and appreciative.

It was really cool seeing the way that we can improve something if we all work really hard together. It was amazing!

I enjoyed hanging out at Fairfield Park, rubbing shoulders and playing sports with kids who I wouldn’t normally see. It was great to see them smile, hear about their backgrounds and relate with them. It was also real fun hanging out with our Youth Community there – was awesome to see our teenagers serving and learning different ways that they can be a blessing to others.

A Maori elder came up to me and expressed how happy he was that we were doing this because his whanau and church community were heavily interested in sports, including tennis! It was so cool to see how we were doing something really great for the community and that it really did matter to people.

One story that stands out in my head was that we were able to pick up a beautiful wooden cot. When we brought it back to the collection spot one of the guys had exactly the family that needed one, which was cool.

The next house we went to, I shared this story with the lady as I was chatting to her and her children – just expressing to her how easy it is to be a blessing to others. She said to me “I have a brand new cot mattress that has never been used and we won’t use it.” She wanted to get rid of it and offered it to us. My jaw dropped! She was so pleased that this lovely fully inner sprung mattress could be of use. Meanwhile the local MP’s husband was in our car… watching on and just taking it all in. I know God was at work in all of that, it was something really small in the big picture of things – but a detail that brings life to that God picture I’m sure.

We chopped onions, stirred bloody beef, crushed garlic, defrosted peas, and snapped asparagus. I know that God’s love went into the food and I believe that it will touch the hearts of those that eat it.
